Empowering Advanced Research and Creative Projects

The prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowships continue to offer robust support for scholars and professionals across diverse disciplines, providing a monthly stipend of Rs 1,00,000 for a duration of two years. Administered by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, the programme is designed to foster innovative research, advanced technical studies, and in-depth explorations of contemporary issues relevant to India.

Unlike traditional academic grants, the fellowship extends beyond conventional disciplines such as the sciences and humanities. It actively accommodates individuals whose creative pursuits may fall outside standard academic frameworks, including writers, journalists, artists, and civil servants.

Flexible Eligibility and Zero Age Restriction

A defining characteristic of the fellowship scheme is its inclusivity regarding age and career stage. Recognising that established scholars and professionals—particularly those in their 40s and 50s—often require dedicated blocks of time to deepen their expertise, the programme enforces no upper age restriction.

Applicants must demonstrate a proven track record of excellence and a clear vision for pursuing a creative project that pushes boundaries in their respective fields. The fellowship is open exclusively to Indian citizens, who retain the freedom to conduct their research and creative work at any location of their choice within the country.

Financial Support and Contingencies

Beyond the primary monthly stipend of Rs 1 lakh, the fellowship provides supplementary financial backing to ensure recipients can focus entirely on their objectives. Fellows receive coverage for actual expenses incurred on secretarial assistance, travel, and other operational contingencies, subject to an annual ceiling of Rs 75,000.

Established in 1968, the fellowship programme has inducted 155 recipients over its decades-long history. Selection is managed by a distinguished committee of experts tasked with upholding rigorous standards of excellence while ensuring representation across a broad spectrum of talent.

Expansion Into Doctoral Studies

In addition to the mid-career fellowships, the overarching initiative encompasses doctoral support. Originally launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1987 as a post-graduate study scheme, the framework was transitioned to the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in the early 1990s.

Backed by an initial government corpus of Rs 7 crore, the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships for Doctoral Studies were officially inaugurated in 1994. Managed through the interest accrued from the corpus, the doctoral scheme had supported 688 scholars by 2017, further cementing the Fund's extensive legacy in Indian higher education and research.
