Chennai City Bus Rams Seven Cars and Divider Outside High Court, Sparking Safety Concerns
A runaway city bus crashed into seven parked vehicles and a road divider outside the Madras High Court, narrowly missing pedestrians.

Dramatic Incident Outside Madras High Court
CHENNAI — A major disaster was averted on one of Chennai's busiest thoroughfares on Tuesday when an out-of-control Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus plowed through a line of parked cars before crashing into a central divider directly outside the Madras High Court.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries were reported in the collision involving route number 109A. However, the chaotic sequence of events left several vehicles extensively damaged and renewed urgent calls for better traffic management and parking infrastructure around the vital judicial complex.
Narrow Escape for Pedestrians
Eyewitness accounts from the scene paint a harrowing picture of the incident. Pedestrians on the busy stretch scrambled for safety as the heavy vehicle careened toward the sidewalk.
"I was standing outside a bank across the street when I heard a massive commotion and shouting from the crowd," said an eyewitness who witnessed the crash. "The bus came barrelling down and slammed directly into the parked cars and the concrete median. It is a miracle no one was crushed, especially three women who were walking mere feet away and narrowly managed to escape."
All seven passenger cars damaged in the pileup belonged to advocates practicing at the Madras High Court, who typically park along the congested arterial stretch due to a shortage of dedicated parking facilities.
Investigation Underway
Traffic police and emergency responders rushed to the scene following the collision. The severely damaged bus, which came to a halt obstructing the carriageway, was eventually hauled away using a heavy-duty crane to restore normal traffic flow.
Preliminary inquiries are focusing on a potential mechanical failure, though investigators have yet to issue a definitive cause.
"The exact reason behind the loss of control remains under investigation," a senior police official stated. "Initial statements suggest it may have been a sudden brake failure, but we will thoroughly interrogate both the driver and the conductor as part of our comprehensive probe."
Demands for Exclusive Parking Infrastructure
The incident has reignited long-standing grievances among members of the legal fraternity regarding severe traffic congestion and parking deficits surrounding the court premises. Following the crash, lawyers gathered at the site to voice their concerns, renewing demands for the construction of an exclusive multilevel parking facility to keep heavy traffic and parking zones segregated in the high-security judicial zone.
