Stepping Up Public Transit Initiatives

As air quality metrics begin their seasonal downward spiral, transit authorities in the national capital are moving swiftly to mitigate vehicular emissions. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Wednesday that it will introduce 20 additional train trips on weekdays starting Thursday.

The decisive operational shift comes on the heels of the formal enforcement of Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region (NCR). By boosting the frequency of trains during peak hours, transport officials aim to entice more commuters away from private vehicles and toward mass rapid transit systems, thereby cutting down aggregate urban emissions.

Comprehensive Dust Mitigation at Sites

Beyond augmenting rail capacity on high-density corridors, the DMRC has ordered an immediate intensification of anti-pollution protocols across its active infrastructure and construction sites.

According to senior transit officials, mandatory compliance checks are being deployed to monitor:

* Dust Suppression: Frequent water sprinkling using anti-smog guns and tankers around station perimeters and construction yards. * Material Coverage: Strict directives ensuring that all construction materials and debris transported to and from DMRC sites are completely covered. * Waste Management: Zero-tolerance policies for open burning or improper disposal of construction waste in and around depot premises.

The Broader Environmental Strategy

Environmental scientists and urban planners have long advocated for robust public transit integration as a core pillar of Delhi's anti-pollution architecture. GRAP Stage 1 imposes a series of preemptive restrictions, including bans on open garbage burning, strict enforcement of PUC (Pollution Under Control) norms for commercial and private vehicles, and dust control mandates at all large-scale construction projects.

With public transport serving as the backbone of commuter mobility during hazardous air quality spells, the DMRC's proactive scheduling aims to prevent congestion while maintaining stringent environmental safeguards across its expansive network.
