Allegations of Mass Takedowns Spark Digital Free Speech Debate

A fresh controversy over digital censorship has erupted in India following allegations by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and several prominent public figures that social media platform Instagram has been directed to remove thousands of critical posts targeting the central government.

Founding members of the CJP, including Abhijeet Dipke and Ashutosh Ranka, took to public platforms to claim that a systemic crackdown is underway. According to Dipke, thousands of posts and accounts questioning government policies are being scrubbed daily. He argued that removing digital content fails to address the underlying grievances of citizens and risks aggravating public distrust.

"The Instagram crackdown is not going to work! The government is taking down thousands of posts and accounts every day, but it seems to be missing a fundamental point," Dipke stated in a public address. He added that the suppression of dissenting voices only deepens the alienation between the administration and the public.

Comrade Ashutosh Ranka echoed these sentiments, alleging that hundreds of thousands of videos and numerous accounts have faced restriction across India in recent days.

Government and Ministry Response

In response to the allegations, sources within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) firmly denied any government involvement in the suppression or restriction of Instagram accounts and posts.

"MeitY has not asked Meta to take down certain posts on Instagram. It has not asked to block or restrict certain accounts on Instagram," ministry sources clarified. Officials indicated that any content moderation decisions implemented on the platform are strictly a matter of the platform's internal guidelines and corporate policies rather than state-mandated orders.

Prominent Artists and Satirists Affected

The controversy intensified after notable artists and satirists reported direct enforcement actions against their content. Renowned lyricist and satirist Varun Grover shared notifications he received from Instagram stating that a musical adaptation of his satirical poem regarding the government's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision had been restricted.

According to screenshots shared by Grover, the platform's notice cited compliance with a legal requirement under India's Information Technology Act. Grover criticized the move publicly, highlighting the increasing friction between creative expression and digital platform regulations.

Legal experts note that while intermediaries like Meta are bound by local compliance frameworks under the IT Act, transparency regarding government requisitions versus voluntary safety enforcement remains a central point of contention for digital rights advocates and political opposition groups alike.
