Government Demands Accountability

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress party, demanding a formal apology following a major security fact-check by the Indian Army. The controversy erupted after social media handles, including verified party representatives, disseminated manipulated media and misleading claims regarding India's border security in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

The military's counter-disinformation cell exposed a coordinated inauthentic behavior campaign. Multiple social media accounts circulated manipulated clips and false narratives intended to destabilize public trust in the armed forces and portray unauthorized foreign intrusions along the Line of Actual Control.

Unraveling the Misinformation Campaign

The Indian Army formally debunked two distinct pieces of misleading content that gained traction across digital platforms. The first instance involved footage of commercial transport vehicles at the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. While designated trade routes operate under established bilateral agreements, the video was deliberately captioned to present routine commercial movement as an active military intrusion.

In a more severe breach of digital integrity, a second viral video featured a digitally altered deepfake targeting a senior military commander. The fabricated clip falsely attributed statements to Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, GOC Spear Corps, claiming that foreign forces had seized territory in Arunachal Pradesh's Asaphila, Longjou, and Taksing Circle, and that the military was being deliberately starved of essential logistics.

Forensic analysis confirmed that the audio and visual elements of the general were synthesized using archived footage from a completely unrelated press briefing conducted in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir.

Political Fallout and National Security

Condemning the spread of synthetic media that compromises national security for partisan gains, Union Minister Rijiju criticized the involvement of opposition figures in propagating unverified and fabricated claims. Defense analysts have repeatedly warned that the weaponization of deepfakes and coordinated inauthentic behavior poses a direct challenge to democratic discourse and institutional credibility.

Authorities have flagged multiple handles involved in the rapid amplification of the disinformation network, reiterating the necessity for citizens and public figures to verify source materials through official channels before sharing sensitive geopolitical content.
