A New Gateway for India's Financial Capital

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has revealed its comprehensive architectural vision and artistic impressions for the sweeping redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1). The blueprint outlines a modern, passenger-centric facility designed to replace the ageing infrastructure while incorporating elements of Mumbai's rich cultural heritage and improving overall operational efficiency.

The detailed visuals were officially presented during a briefing with the Airport Airline Operators Committee (AOC). According to CSMIA officials, the renderings illustrate the proposed architectural character and envisioned passenger experience for the future terminal, establishing a clear framework rather than a final preview of the completed site.

Addressing Safety and Structural Needs

Commissioned in 1964, the existing Terminal 1 has served aviation in Mumbai for over six decades. However, independent structural audits conducted by Structwel in 2017 and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 2024 underscored significant safety and structural vulnerabilities. These findings established that replacing the decades-old terminal is an urgent necessity from a public safety perspective.

The proposed redevelopment aims to convert the site into an advanced aviation gateway. The architectural concepts feature a sweeping departure entrance, a spacious and naturally illuminated check-in hall, and interiors accented with art murals inspired by Mumbai's cultural identity.

For departing passengers, the design envisions a welcoming hold area complete with indoor greenery, premium lounges, and expansive glass facades overlooking the runways. Arriving passengers will be greeted by an open, artistic kerbside featuring a large flamingo sculpture honoring the region's natural biodiversity.

Expanded Capacity and Modern Infrastructure

Beyond aesthetic and structural updates, the redevelopment project delivers a substantial boost to the airport's passenger-handling capabilities and overall throughput:

* Annual Passenger Capacity: Projected to increase by 33 per cent, rising from 15 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 20 mppa. * Check-In Infrastructure: Counters will expand by 47 per cent, moving from 74 to 109. * Security Screening: Passenger screening lanes and transfer lanes will experience a 2.5-fold increase, totaling 15 screening lanes and five transfer lanes. * Aircraft Stands: Contact stands will scale up dramatically from seven to 25, significantly reducing reliance on remote boarding arrangements. * Boarding and Baggage: Conventional boarding gates will make way for 12 state-of-the-art e-gates, while baggage reclaim belts will increase from five to 11 to streamline luggage collection.

Following the full integration of the new Terminal 1, CSMIA expects its combined annual passenger-handling capacity to reach 65 million.

Phased Timeline and Continuity of Operations

To ensure minimal disruption to travelers, CSMIA has engineered a phased construction strategy. Demolition of the current Terminal 1 is scheduled to commence in April 2027.

To accommodate interim domestic traffic during the construction phase, the expansion of the G+3 T2 North-West Pier is slated to become operational by March 2029. The entirely rebuilt Terminal 1 is targeted for final completion by December 2030, marking a major milestone in Mumbai's aviation infrastructure modernization.
