International Recognition for Extraordinary Bravery

In a solemn presidential ceremony in the United Arab Emirates, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and his flydubai crew were officially decorated with the First Class Order of Zayed II. The prestigious civil award was conferred by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in recognition of their exceptional courage and quick thinking during a harrowing mid-air security crisis aboard a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv commercial flight.

The medals were formally presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence. According to an official statement released by the Dubai Media Office, the leadership commended the entire flight crew for their unwavering sense of responsibility and composure under extreme duress.

The September 30 Incident Aboard Flight FZ1073

The commendation follows a terrifying sequence of events on September 30 aboard flydubai flight FZ1073. Carrying more than 170 passengers and crew, the aircraft was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it became the scene of an unprecedented cockpit assault.

According to official reports from Israeli and regional authorities, the co-pilot—identified as an Omani national—suddenly attacked Captain Machchhar using a heavy cockpit crash axe, typically kept sealed for emergencies. The brutal assault resulted in a compound depressed skull fracture, leaving Captain Machchhar severely injured and bleeding profusely on the flight deck. The rogue co-pilot then reportedly forced the passenger jet into a steep, rapid descent, plunging nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds.

Despite sustaining critical head injuries and severe blood loss, Captain Machchhar mustered his remaining strength to hit the manual release switch on the cockpit door. This vital action allowed off-duty flydubai pilots travelling as passengers, alongside cabin crew members, to rush into the cockpit, overpower the attacker, and stabilize the aircraft. A secondary flight crew successfully diverted and landed the jet safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Global Acclaim and Ongoing Recovery

The ceremony in the UAE provided the first public close-up visuals of Captain Machchhar following the attack, revealing visible surgical staples and stitches across his scalp from emergency neurosurgery. Following initial treatment at a medical facility in Tabuk, he was transferred to Abu Dhabi for specialized care, where Crown Prince Hamdan personally visited him in the hospital.

The high-level civilian decoration from the UAE adds to a growing list of accolades for the Indian captain. The Gujarat state government has honored him with the Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award, and the Israeli government has formally proposed conferring a Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism in recognition of his role in averting a catastrophic disaster.
