The Story Behind a Tech Giant's Moniker

More than two decades after its inception, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has shared the behind-the-scenes resistance he faced when choosing the iconic name for the social media platform. According to Ohanian, the now-ubiquitous brand was initially met with widespread criticism from his peers and partners, who considered it a poor choice for a startup.

In a social media post, Ohanian reflected on the early days of the company, detailing how he ultimately relied on his authority as CEO to override the dissenting opinions of his colleagues.

Vision Over Consensus

Ohanian explained that his conviction stemmed from a specific linguistic pun he anticipated would integrate into everyday vernacular: the phrase, "I read it on Reddit."

"21 years ago I named 'Reddit' and everyone said it was a horrible name, but I insisted one day people would say 'I read it on reddit' and used my CEO-privilege to overrule everyone + kept the name," Ohanian stated.

The revelation surfaced in response to a pun-laden post by the platform's official corporate account on X, which quipped, “I'd tell you a joke, but you've probably already Reddit.”

Ohanian acknowledged the irony of the company's official account leaning into the exact linguistic play he had envisioned decades prior, noting that the joke was made independently of his input.

Historical Roots and Growth

Reddit was founded in June 2005 by Ohanian and his University of Virginia roommate, Steve Huffman. The startup participated in Y Combinator’s inaugural batch before being acquired by Condé Nast in 2006.

Following a departure and subsequent return that included a tenure as executive chairman, Ohanian officially resigned from the company's board of directors in 2020. The platform later achieved a major corporate milestone by going public in March 2024, cementing its status as one of the most prominent digital communities on the internet.

Ohanian's recent reflections sparked considerable discussion within the entrepreneurship community regarding the balance between democratic team consensus and definitive founder vision during the early stages of building a startup.
