Operation Unmasked: How the Syndicate Operated

Law enforcement authorities in Maharashtra have dismantled a sophisticated sextortion syndicate that systematically targeted affluent individuals using popular dating applications. Operating with a high degree of precision, the network relied on vulnerability, manufactured legal troubles, and covert recordings to extort crores of rupees from victims across major urban centers.

According to the Nagpur Police, the criminal enterprise was orchestrated by 35-year-old Aditya Gupta, who was taken into custody on Wednesday. Investigators revealed that the syndicate's modus operandi involved recruiting struggling young women—including engineers and working professionals—by offering substantial financial incentives. These women were then deployed to establish contact with wealthy men on dating platforms such as Mika, lure them into intimate video calls, and secretly record the interactions.

The Extortion Framework

Once the explicit footage was secured, Gupta would step into the operation under the guise of an influential social activist and legal adviser. Leveraging strict legal frameworks designed to protect women, he allegedly pressured local law enforcement to register formal First Information Reports (FIRs) alleging sexual harassment and rape against the targeted individuals.

With criminal charges officially filed, Gupta would initiate heavy-handed negotiations, demanding exorbitant sums—amounting to crores of rupees—to secure a settlement and withdraw the legal complaints. The sheer scale of the operation came to light when Gupta attempted to extort a staggering Rs 3 crore from his latest victim.

Lavish Lifestyle and High-Level Facade

Police investigations into Gupta's background paint a picture of a calculated fraudster. Hailing originally from Agra, where he previously faced theft charges filed by his own family, Gupta had severed ties with his relatives five years prior. Relocating to Maharashtra, he cultivated an image of high-level political and bureaucratic access.

Living out of luxury five-star hotels and driving expensive vehicles, Gupta went to elaborate lengths to project influence. Investigators discovered that he even utilized a digitally altered photograph featuring senior political leaders as his messaging application profile picture to intimidate victims and deter scrutiny.

Crackdown and Ongoing Investigation

Gupta's undoing ultimately stemmed from his over-involvement in the legal proceedings he manufactured. Law enforcement officers grew suspicious of his persistent presence and unsolicited interference in multiple cases.

Sensing an opening, the Nagpur Police launched a covert operation, coordinating closely with a victim identified as Irfan. After taking the victim into confidence, authorities mapped out the entire extortion plot before executing the arrest.

During subsequent searches, police seized Gupta's mobile phone, uncovering more than 400 explicit videos. Authorities are currently expanding the scope of the investigation to determine the exact number of women coerced into serving as pawns and to identify additional victims across metropolitan hubs including Delhi, Pune, and Nagpur. Multiple criminal cases have formally been registered against the accused as the legal proceedings move forward.
