Founder of Self-Declared Micro-Nation Verdis Honored at UN-Adjacent Gala

A Global Stage for a Micro-Nation
Daniel Jackson, the 21-year-old British national who drew international attention by attempting to found his own sovereign territory, has been honored at a high-profile gala event in New York. Jackson received an award recognizing humanitarian efforts linked to his self-proclaimed micro-nation, the Free Republic of Verdis.
The recognition was presented by the Institute of Public Policy and Diplomacy Research. Accompanying Jackson at the ceremony were several officials representing his self-declared government.
"It definitely was intense. It was a very interesting experience. There were quite a lot of high-end people there. It was very nerve-wracking," Jackson remarked following the event. "Being only 21 years old, I am still sort of getting used to this experience of turning up to these events with such interesting and influential people."
Origins Along the Danube
The genesis of Verdis traces back several years to a small, roughly 0.5-square-kilometre pocket of land situated near the Danube River, nestled between the borders of Croatia and Serbia. The territory had previously remained unclaimed by either neighboring nation.
Seizing the geopolitical vacuum, Jackson and a group of associates planted a flag on the patch of land, declaring the establishment of the Free Republic of Verdis and naming Jackson its president. Over subsequent years, the group attempted to formalize their entity by drafting a constitution, establishing administrative frameworks, and cultivating a digital community that now encompasses hundreds of registered citizens globally.
Diplomatic Ambitions and Real-World Hurdles
Despite active lobbying—including participation by Verdis government ministers in the UN General Assembly Youth Mobilisation Segment—Verdis holds no official diplomatic recognition as a sovereign state from the United Nations or any recognized world government.
The path to establishing a physical presence on the territory has also faced severe logistical and legal obstacles. In 2023, Croatian law enforcement authorities detained and subsequently deported several settlers, including Jackson, who was also handed a lifetime ban from entering Croatia.
According to Jackson, Croatian authorities have since installed surveillance infrastructure, including cameras along the disputed coastline, effectively cutting off access from the Serbian side and reducing the administration to function as a government in exile.
