BJP-NDA Dominates Karnataka Legislative Council Polls
BENGALURU — In a major political setback for the ruling Congress party in Karnataka, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally, JD(S), clean-swept all four seats in the recent Legislative Council elections.
The opposition alliance secured victories across the North-East Teachers', South-East Graduates', West Graduates', and Bengaluru Teachers' constituencies. The elections, which utilized traditional ballot papers, took place on October 23, with results highlighting shifting political dynamics in the state.
Constituency Breakdown and Key Results
The electoral sweep showcased significant losses for the Congress across key educational and professional segments:
* Bengaluru Teachers' Constituency: JD(S) candidate AP Ranganath, backed by the BJP, wrested the seat from incumbent Congress MLC Puttanna by a margin of 908 votes. Ranganath secured 10,810 votes against Puttanna's 9,902. * North-East Teachers' Constituency: Veteran BJP leader and sitting MLC Shashil G Namoshi defeated Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes. This marks Namoshi's fifth consecutive victory from the segment in the Kalyana Karnataka region. * South-East Graduates' Constituency: BJP candidate KM Suresh registered a commanding victory over Congress' Shashi Hulikunte Mutt, winning by a substantial margin of 23,098 votes. * West Graduates' Constituency: Sitting BJP MLC SV Sankanur successfully defended his stronghold against Congress challenger Mohan Limbikai, securing victory by 9,323 votes.
Political Fallout and Reactions
Following the electoral whitewash, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar acknowledged the defeat, stating that the party would review the results and work towards strengthening its grassroots organization.
"We respect and accept the voters' verdict in the Legislative Council elections. We had expected to win two seats. The voters have sent us a message, and we will review the results," Shivakumar told reporters in Bengaluru.
However, opposition leaders launched scathing attacks against the administration. Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa claimed that the electorate was disillusioned with the current government, suggesting fresh elections.
JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy also criticized the Chief Minister, alleging that the election outcome reflects widespread public dissatisfaction with unfulfilled governance promises.
With these results, the composition of the 75-member Karnataka Legislative Council stands at 37 members from the Congress, 24 from the BJP, seven from the JD(S), one Independent, and Chairman Saleem Ahmed, with five government nomination vacancies remaining.
