Confrontation in Mansa

An escalating political and social crisis unfolded in Punjab's Mansa district on Monday following the death of 35-year-old Daljit Singh, who allegedly succumbed to a drug overdose. The incident quickly transformed into a flashpoint between local residents and law enforcement, drawing sharp condemnation from major opposition figures against the Bhagwant Mann-led state government.

Family members and villagers from Bhamme Kalan attempted to transport Singh's body to a designated site where ongoing protests were demanding justice for the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota. However, local police heavily barricaded the route by parking official vehicles and heavy trucks across the roadway.

The situation deteriorated rapidly at Ramditte Wala Chowk. Protesters alleged that police forces resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the crowd before seizing Daljit Singh's body and taking several demonstrators into custody.

Official Police Response

Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Chaudhary defended the intervention, stating that police action was necessary to maintain public order and prevent potential escalation.

"The body has been taken into police custody and sent out of station for a post-mortem examination," SSP Chaudhary said, addressing media queries regarding the operation.

Chaudhary emphasized that law enforcement would not perform the final rites and assured that further procedures would proceed strictly in consultation with the grieving family. He added that the separate sit-in protest remained peaceful and police would avoid interfering directly at the demonstration site.

Political Fallout

The seizure of the body immediately triggered severe backlash from opposition leaders who criticized the state government's handling of the worsening drug crisis and its treatment of citizens.

Congress leader Raja Brar denounced the police action as "shameful and inhuman," asserting on social media that confiscating a dead man's body violated basic human dignity and the family's right to mourn. He directly questioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing the administration of manhandling the dead instead of dismantling the entrenched drug syndicates operating within the state.

Similarly, Shiromani Akali Development leadership voiced profound anger over the visuals emerging from the streets, accusing authorities of crossing ethical boundaries during the handling of public dissent.

As political pressure mounts ahead of upcoming state elections, the incident has reignited intense scrutiny over the Punjab government's anti-narcotics strategy and its management of civil unrest.
