Zoho co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu has cautioned that artificial intelligence is driving a fundamental restructuring of computer-based labor.

The AI Productivity Leap

Artificial intelligence has crossed a critical threshold where a single skilled professional leveraging AI tools can match the output of ten traditional workers, according to Zoho co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu. In a public statement addressing the future of white-collar employment, Vembu warned that computer-centric professions face unprecedented disruption as generative technologies reshape productivity benchmarks.

"Any job performed on the computer has this risk now: one smart person using AI can perform the work of 10 people," Vembu stated. While the assessment highlights a dramatic contraction in the labor requirement for specific tasks, the tech leader clarified that the shift will not translate into a blanket 90 percent unemployment rate for desk workers.

Economic Rebalancing Over Mass Unemployment

Rather than predicting total job annihilation, Vembu outlined a complex economic transition characterized by market expansion and restructuring. As the operational cost of advanced digital services drops significantly, smaller enterprises and industries that were previously priced out of hiring specialized talent will gain access to high-end capabilities.

"Industries that previously could not afford to hire software engineers or digital marketers could afford them now, for example," Vembu explained. "What it does mean is a rebalancing across the economy, and that is painful when we go through it. The only thing we can do is to accept that it is coming and be prepared for it."

Broader Industry Shifts Amid Big Tech Restructuring

Vembu's warnings arrive against the backdrop of aggressive workforce reductions across the global technology sector. Even as major corporations report rising profits, giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle have aggressively trimmed headcount throughout the year.

Industry analysts note that these corporate retrenchments are frequently designed to redirect capital toward massive artificial intelligence infrastructure investments. As tech enterprises prioritize automation and efficiency gains, the economic friction predicted by industry leaders like Vembu is rapidly transforming from theoretical forecasting into everyday corporate reality.
