Controversy Erupts Over Academic's Detainment

CHENNAI — A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following allegations by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) that internationally recognized economist and Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) associate professor A. Kalaiyarasan was unlawfully detained by plain-clothes police officers in Chennai.

CPM Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam strongly condemned the early-morning police action, questioning whether the state was descending into a "police state." Shanmugam stated that if law enforcement authorities had any legitimate complaints or inquiries regarding the academic, they should have followed due process by officially registering a case and issuing a formal summons.

Details of the Alleged Incident

While police officials have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, an unverified letter addressed to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, purportedly written by Kalaiyarasan and dated October 28, has brought startling details to light.

According to the document, three plain-clothes personnel arrived at the economist's Adyar residence at approximately 5:00 AM while he was asleep. The officers allegedly confiscated his mobile phone, citing an inquiry into an allegedly abusive social media comment. The letter claims that no formal authorization, copy of a complaint, or First Information Report (FIR) was presented during the interaction.

Kalaiyarasan was reportedly taken away in a rented vehicle without immediate notification to his family, gaining permission to contact associates only after repeated requests.

Social Media Allegations and Release

During the questioning, the personnel reportedly displayed a screenshot of an abusive Instagram comment directed at Pallavaram TVK MLA J. Kamatchi. Although the account in question featured Kalaiyarasan's photograph, it operated under a completely different username. The academic firmly denied any association with the profile, stating he has never maintained an Instagram account.

Following a written statement denying any involvement, his mobile phone was returned, and he was reportedly dropped back at his residence around 7:45 AM. The letter calls for strict action against the involved personnel, characterizing the episode as harassment and unlawful detention.

Background on the Academic

A. Kalaiyarasan is a distinguished political economist known for his extensive research on development and Tamil Nadu's growth model, notably authoring The Dravidian Model published by Cambridge University Press. His professional portfolio includes stints at prestigious institutions such as the Planning Commission, King's College London, Brown University, and IIT Bombay, alongside contributions to the Tamil Nadu government's Economic Survey.

As public scrutiny mounts, law enforcement authorities have yet to formally clarify the legal basis of the operation or confirm whether an official complaint was lodged.
