Military Sweep Marks Intensified Tensions in Hebron

Israeli military forces launched a sweeping operation in the West Bank city of Hebron, displacing roughly 250 families—some in overnight raids—following a deadly attack on soldiers at a nearby checkpoint. The security measures have targeted approximately one-third of the flashpoint city, where hardline Israeli settlers live in close proximity to Palestinian residents.

The operation comes just days ahead of tight national elections. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled that the military actions in the West Bank could expand to an unprecedented scale, reminiscent of the initial 1967 occupation, vowing severe consequences for the attack that claimed the lives of two Israeli soldiers.

Neighborhoods Cleared and Marked

In the Ein Dir Baha neighborhood, nestled between two local hills, buildings bore spray-painted X's indicating they had been cleared of occupants. Streets typically bustling with pedestrian and vehicular traffic were largely deserted, patrolled by military vehicles with an Israeli flag draped over a residence reportedly commandeered by troops.

Local residents recounted being woken up in the middle of the night and given mere hours to evacuate. Higazi Shawer al-Tamimi, a 70-year-old local shopkeeper and neighborhood figure, stated that troops ordered him to leave his home at 1:00 AM with only basic belongings and official papers. Many displaced families have struggled to find temporary housing with relatives due to the sudden nature of the evacuation.

Accusations of Collective Punishment

Local authorities have strongly condemned the military's actions. Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin asserted that the operation amounts to collective punishment against civilians unconnected to Friday's shooting. While local estimates place the number of affected families between 150 and 250, municipal leaders have mobilized to provide emergency shelter and humanitarian aid.

Hebron Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari emphasized that local agencies are working urgently to assist those uprooted by the midnight raids.

Netanyahu Hints at Broader Strategic Shifts

While the Israel Defense Forces described the current actions as precise and targeted searches focused on the associates of the two deceased gunmen, Prime Minister Netanyahu suggested that broader actions are imminent.

Amid mounting political pressure and demands from far-right national security figures to dismantle the Palestinian Authority—the semi-autonomous governing body in parts of the West Bank—Netanyahu hinted at impending strategic changes in the region. Although there is no evidence linking the Palestinian Authority to Friday's checkpoint attack, Netanyahu maintained that his administration plans to neutralize perceived threats through unspecified means, pointing to broader regional shifts across the Middle East.
