A Remarkable Survival Story

In a harrowing tale of resilience that highlights the brutal realities of modern warfare, a Ukrainian soldier has been rescued after spending 491 days trapped behind enemy lines. Kostiantyn Vlasenko, a 49-year-old soldier with the 30th Mechanised Brigade, endured nearly eight months isolated in a tiny underground cavity beneath the rubble of a destroyed school before a specialized drone extraction brought him to safety.

Prior to the conflict, Vlasenko worked as a heavy truck driver at a quarry in Kryvyi Rih. He volunteered for military service when the war escalated, eventually finding himself deployed to a perilous front-line position known as Vertun.

Trapped by Unrelenting Surveillance

Life at the forward post quickly deteriorated as the skies above filled with hostile surveillance and attack drones. According to Vlasenko, relief parties dispatched to his position were repeatedly targeted and killed by enemy fire. Recognizing the lethal danger facing any rescue squad, Vlasenko instructed his command to halt further attempts to reach him on foot, preferring to face the isolation alone rather than risk more lives.

In mid-February, flooding forced Vlasenko and his comrade from their original concrete drainage pipe shelter into the ruins of a nearby school. Shortly after, a drone strike killed his companion and severely injured Vlasenko's lower extremities. Amid constant aerial surveillance, he managed to crawl into a cramped 80-by-60-centimetre space underneath an old industrial boiler.

Despite the extreme conditions, Ukrainian forces maintained contact with him via radio and used regular drone drops to supply him with food, medicine, and cigarettes. Russian forces attempted psychological warfare, deploying a loudspeaker drone near his hiding spot to broadcast messages claiming his comrades had abandoned him. However, support from his command and communication with his unit kept his morale intact.

The High-Tech Extraction

Traditional rescue operations proved impossible. Armoured vehicles could not penetrate the heavily contested zone, and two experimental ground-based rescue robots were destroyed before they could reach his position.

With ground routes entirely cut off, military planners devised an unprecedented aerial extraction. In early October, a supply drone delivered a specialized harness along with a mobile device loaded with instructional videos. On October 4, a heavy six-propeller drone descended directly to his location.

Vlasenko secured himself to the aircraft's winch system and was lifted approximately 70 metres into the air. The remotely piloted machine then carried him roughly 15 kilometres over active front lines to safety, concluding one of the most extraordinary survival and rescue operations of the conflict.
