US Republican Candidate Ritesh Tandon Blames Trump's Economic Policies and Iran Conflict for Inflation
Republican congressional candidate Ritesh Tandon breaks party lines to criticize Donald Trump's trade tariffs and military stance on Iran.

Challenging the Party Line
In an unexpected departure from the mainstream Republican platform, Ritesh Tandon, the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives in California's 17th Congressional District, has openly criticized former US President Donald Trump. Tandon argued that Trump’s economic policies and foreign interventions have directly contributed to the mounting financial pressures facing American households, particularly in California.
Tandon, who is gearing up to challenge Democratic incumbent Ro Khanna in the upcoming midterm elections, pointed to sweeping trade tariffs and aggressive foreign postures as primary drivers of domestic economic distress.
Economic Strain and Inflation
Speaking on the state of the economy, Tandon emphasized that everyday Americans are bearing the brunt of high inflation, elevated interest rates, and soaring energy costs. He specifically targeted the broad tariff regime implemented under Trump, noting its cascading effect on consumer goods and the housing market.
"Right now, when you look into the Bay Area and across the USA, because of the tariffs that he has imposed, the prices are very high. Inflation is very high," Tandon stated. He highlighted the dramatic shift in mortgage rates, pointing out that housing interest rates have climbed from the 4 to 5 percent range to approximately 7.5 percent.
Furthermore, Tandon drew a direct line between foreign policy decisions and domestic fuel prices. He argued that military escalation with Iran severely disrupted global oil markets, pushing diesel and gasoline prices to unprecedented levels that subsequently inflated the cost of transporting consumer goods.
Proposed Policy Shifts and Immigration Reform
Looking ahead to his legislative priorities, Tandon pledged to focus heavily on economic affordability, reducing regulatory burdens, and fostering technological innovation, including artificial intelligence education. He sharply contrasted his platform with that of his Democratic opponent, criticizing current congressional approaches to public spending.
On the immigration front, Tandon outlined an ambitious plan to dismantle existing country-specific quotas, which he argues disproportionately penalize legal applicants from nations like India.
"When you look at white Europeans when they come to this country, and Indian-Americans... Indians wait for 20 years to get a green card, whereas white Europeans get a green card in six months," Tandon said. Promising to overhaul the system, he emphasized that applicants performing equivalent jobs and paying identical taxes should not face disparate processing timelines.
Tandon concluded his remarks by addressing local governance in California, criticizing single-party Democratic rule while maintaining that regional crime rates have seen significant improvements.
