Valuation Reality Check Ahead of Public Debut

As artificial intelligence pioneer Anthropic prepares for its highly anticipated initial public offering, corporate finance expert and New York University Stern School of Business Professor Aswath Damodaran has released a comprehensive valuation that places the company's equity value at $1.475 trillion. The assessment comes in slightly below the lower end of the startup's reported IPO pricing range of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion, offering a sobering perspective for investors riding the crest of the ongoing AI market boom.

Damodaran's detailed analysis, shared following the release of the company's prospectus, cautions that while Anthropic demonstrates exceptional revenue growth, prospective shareholders must realistically weigh future profitability against mounting infrastructure expenditures and intensifying sector competition.

Governance Concerns and Founder Entrenchment

Beyond pure financial metrics, Damodaran raised sharp concerns regarding the corporate governance framework governing Anthropic as a public benefit corporation. He warned that the company's dual-class share voting structure heavily entrenches its founders in a manner that leaves little power to everyday public stakeholders.

"As a potential investor in Anthropic, keep in mind its status as a public benefit corporation, with you as one of many stakeholders, and a share voting structure that would put Kim Jong Un to shame in entrenching founders," Damodaran wrote in a public commentary. He noted that while the governance model may not automatically serve as a dealbreaker for every institutional buyer, it acts as a significant "value discounter" for risk-conscious investors.

Growth Projections and Profit Margins

Damodaran's valuation model is deliberately constructed on an optimistic baseline scenario. His projections anticipate that Anthropic's annual revenue could approach the $1 trillion mark by 2036, backed by an operating profit margin of approximately 27.5 percent once regulatory frameworks mature.

He acknowledges that the broader market for artificial intelligence products and services could ultimately surpass $5 trillion. Anthropic, recognized as the creator of the Claude family of generative AI models, remains exceptionally well-positioned to capture premium enterprise clients willing to pay top-dollar for advanced, highly reliable systems.

Furthermore, the company has signaled strategic intentions to expand beyond standard software tooling into legacy industries heavily disrupted by automation, including pharmaceutical research and drug development. However, the NYU professor cautioned investors against treating long-term speculative expansions as guaranteed financial returns.

Financial Momentum Versus Operational Realities

Financial disclosures accompanying the IPO preparations underscore the explosive demand for Anthropic's technology. Revenue generated during the first two quarters of the year surged to roughly fourteen times the volume recorded during the same period in the previous year.

Despite this staggering velocity, Damodaran emphasizes that the ultimate test for Anthropic will lie in its ability to convert rapid top-line expansion into sustained, long-term net profits amidst a landscape defined by skyrocketing compute infrastructure costs and aggressive competition from rival technology giants.
