Indian Equities Turn Volatile as Sensex Dips 600 Points Following Positive Open; Crypto Markets Pull Back
Indian benchmark indices experienced sharp volatility on Friday, reversing early gains as the Sensex dropped over 600 points from its morning high amid broader macro pressures.

Market Volatility Grips Dalal Street
Indian equity benchmarks witnessed a dramatic turnaround on Friday, shifting from a positive opening to deep intraday volatility. The benchmark Sensex, which initially opened in the green with a 300-point gain alongside a 50-point jump in the Nifty, rapidly reversed trajectory. Selling pressure intensified as the session progressed, pushing the Sensex down by more than 600 points from its intraday peak.
Market analysts noted that despite an encouraging start, the lack of sustained buying momentum above crucial psychological thresholds triggered profit-booking and defensive positioning among institutional investors.
Currency and Macroeconomic Indicators
In the foreign exchange market, the Indian rupee demonstrated initial resilience. The local currency opened 3 paise stronger against the US dollar at 94.79, compared to its previous close of 94.82. However, broader currency trends remained susceptible to shifting global commodity prices and incoming macroeconomic data from major global economies.
Meanwhile, global markets continue to grapple with tightening monetary policy expectations. Ahead of the crucial US Federal Reserve decision scheduled for October 28, international equities faced downward pressure, with the Nasdaq sliding 2.60% and the S&P 500 losing 1.21% in the preceding Wall Street session.
Cryptocurrency Markets Face Correction
Parallel to traditional equity weakness, digital asset markets experienced a synchronized pullback. Leading cryptocurrencies surrendered their gains from the previous two sessions, with the top ten digital assets by market capitalization posting an average loss of over 3.6%.
Bitcoin retreated approximately 3.4% to trade near $81,374, while Ethereum dropped 3.5% to $2,388. Altcoins including Cardano and Avalanche bore heavier losses, each sliding around 6%. Market strategists point out that sustaining critical support levels will be essential for digital assets to avoid deeper technical corrections in the near term.
As trading sessions progress, market participants are advised to exercise caution, monitor key support and resistance zones closely, and stay attuned to evolving geopolitical and macroeconomic developments.
