Midnight Blaze Wreaks Havoc

A massive fire swept through the prominent market in Goa's port town of Vasco late Wednesday night, destroying more than 150 shops and causing extensive financial damage. The blaze, which erupted around midnight, reduced inventories and vendor stalls to ashes just days before the Diwali festival.

Despite the scale of the destruction, authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported during the incident, thanks to the swift evacuation of the area.

Multi-Agency Emergency Response

The firefighting operation stretched over four hours as emergency crews battled intense flames and thick plumes of smoke. According to Director General of Police Alok Kumar, a coordinated multi-agency effort was deployed to contain the disaster.

Fire tenders from multiple strategic establishments—including the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard, Goa Shipyard Limited, and the Mormugao Port Authority—were rushed to the scene to assist local firefighters in bringing the inferno under control.

Series of Incidents in Vasco

Eyewitnesses and local officials noted an alarming sequence of events leading up to the major market fire, reporting a total of three separate fire incidents in Vasco within a brief span on Wednesday night.

The chain of emergencies began around 10:30 PM with a house fire on the outskirts of the town. Shortly afterward, a second blaze broke out at a local vehicle garage, destroying two cars. Minutes later, the catastrophic fire tore through the main market district, leaving vendors scrambling to salvage whatever goods remained.

Government Assures Relief

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant personally rushed to the site alongside local legislators and state ministers to assess the damage firsthand.

Expressing deep concern over the timing of the disaster, Chief Minister Sawant noted that vendors had heavily stocked their shops with essential items and festive goods for the upcoming Diwali celebrations, resulting in catastrophic financial losses.

"The incident is unfortunate, as vendors who had stocked their shops with essential items for Diwali have majorly suffered," Sawant stated at the site. He assured the affected business owners that the state government would step in with financial assistance to help them recover from the tragedy.

Investigations into the exact cause of the blaze are currently underway, with forensic teams expected to examine the debris once cooling operations are fully concluded.
