Bihar Teen Runs 8,000 Kilometres Across India to Visit All 12 Jyotirlingas After Mother Recovers from Illness
A 19-year-old from Bihar has covered nearly 8,000 kilometres on foot, visiting six Jyotirlingas to fulfill a prayer vow made during his mother's critical illness.

A Promise Forged in Crisis
What began as a desperate prayer in a moment of family crisis has transformed into an extraordinary endurance test across the length and breadth of India. Nineteen-year-old Monu Meturbala, a native of Araria in Bihar, has spent months running across states to fulfill a solemn vow he made when his mother, Lalti Devi, fell critically ill.
The ordeal began when a fish bone became lodged in Lalti Devi's throat, causing her health to deteriorate rapidly despite multiple medical interventions. As anxiety gripped the family, Monu sought divine intervention. According to his elder brother, Sonu Kumar, the teenager made a vow at the historic Baba Siddheshwar Nath Temple on Barabar Hill in Jehanabad: if his mother recovered, he would undertake a pilgrimage on foot to all 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.
When Lalti Devi eventually regained her health, Monu immediately prepared to keep his word. On March 15, 2026, he officially commenced his arduous journey from Patna.
Balancing Hardship and Devotion
Before embarking on this spiritual endurance feat, Monu's life was defined by athletic discipline and economic necessity. Growing up, he played cricket from a young age, building the physical stamina that would later sustain his long-distance running. To help support his family—which includes his father Mahesh Chauhan and brother Sonu, both electricians—Monu worked odd jobs, including selling chaat and golgappas, alongside assisting with electrical work.
Recognizing the financial constraints of his household, Monu set out with limited funds provided by his family and has since been managing the expenses of his cross-country journey independently along the way.
Halfway Through the Sacred Circuit
Covering an average of 50 kilometres a day, Monu's journey has tested his physical limits against varying weather conditions, road challenges, and relentless fatigue. Accompanied by two fellow travellers who provide vital support and companionship, the teenager's progress has been steady.
His first major milestone was the Baba Baidyanath Dham in Jharkhand. To date, he has successfully covered approximately 8,000 kilometres and visited six of the twelve shrines. Currently navigating through Maharashtra, Monu remains resolute in his mission, vowing not to return to his home in Bihar until all twelve Jyotirlingas have been visited.
For his parents, watching their youngest son traverse thousands of kilometres is a profound source of pride. While his father admits he never anticipated the sheer scale of the vow, the family stands united in their admiration for his unwavering dedication and determination.
