Severe Weather Warning Issued for Eastern India

Authorities in Odisha have ramped up disaster preparedness efforts as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that a rapidly intensifying cyclonic system brewing over the Bay of Bengal, designated as Cyclone Arnab, is projected to strike the neighboring Andhra Pradesh coast.

While the storm's core is expected to make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, its expansive outer bands are forecast to trigger torrential rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and destructive wind gusts across several districts in southern Odisha.

Meteorological Projections and Timeline

According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the system currently situated over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is undergoing rapid intensification.

* October 25: Projected to intensify into a deep depression. * October 26: Expected to evolve into a full-scale cyclonic storm by morning. * October 27: Forecast to strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm. * October 28: Anticipated to peak as a very severe cyclonic storm, crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast by forenoon with sustained wind speeds of 115 to 125 km/h, gusting up to 140 km/h.

District-Wise Impact and Red Alerts

A formal 'Red Alert' has been declared for October 28 across five southern Odisha districts: Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. These regions are expected to experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall coupled with surface winds ranging from 50 to 60 km/h, occasionally gusting up to 70 km/h.

In addition, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted for Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Bargarh, and Nuapada. Precipitation is expected to persist through October 29 before gradually tapering off by October 30.

Authorities have also highlighted the heightened risk of landslides in hilly terrain due to the prolonged, intense downpours.

Government and Disaster Response Mobilization

In response to the escalating threat, the Odisha government has canceled all leaves for disaster management personnel and deployed 225 specialized rescue teams strategically across vulnerable block-headquarters.

State Chief Fire Officer Ramesh Majhi confirmed that response units are fully equipped with heavy-duty vehicles, towing equipment, and over 1,500 high-power chainsaws to clear debris and fallen trees swiftly in the aftermath of the storm.

Maritime authorities have hoisted Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1 at all ports along the Odisha coastline. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough, with wind speeds touching 40 to 50 km/h gusting to 60 km/h. Fishermen have been strictly prohibited from venturing into open waters until October 29.
