International Extradition Sought in Cross-Border Custody Case

NEW DELHI — In a significant development in a high-stakes cross-border child custody battle, the Delhi Police have confirmed that formal extradition proceedings have been initiated against a Russian national. Victoria Basu, who allegedly fled India with her minor son last year in violation of Supreme Court directives, is now the subject of an Interpol Red Corner Notice.

During a hearing at the Saket District Court on Thursday, law enforcement authorities submitted an Action Taken Report (ATR) before Judicial Magistrate First Class Deepakshi Rana. The status report detailed the multi-agency efforts currently underway to trace the accused and secure her return to the jurisdiction of Indian courts.

Legal Battle and Supreme Court Violations

The legal entanglement stems from a matrimonial dispute between Victoria Basu and Indian national Saikat Basu, who were married in 2017. The couple's child was born in October 2020.

According to court filings and police investigations, an FIR was registered at the Defence Colony Police Station in 2025 following a formal complaint by Saikat Basu. The complainant alleged that on March 13, 2023, Victoria Basu, accompanied by her mother, left their residence without prior notice and abandoned the child. Subsequently, she initiated legal proceedings seeking exclusive custody of the minor.

The situation escalated when the mother allegedly fled the country with the child despite an active joint custody order issued by the Supreme Court of India.

Diplomatic Channels and Next Steps

With the primary accused currently residing outside Indian jurisdiction, the Delhi Police have escalated the matter through diplomatic and international channels.

* Extradition Request: A formal request has been transmitted via the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Moscow. * Interpol Red Corner Notice: International law enforcement has been alerted via a Red Corner Notice to track and locate Victoria Basu. * Documentary Evidence: Investigators are currently analyzing financial and legal documents provided by the complainant to determine further necessary actions under Indian law.

The Saket District Court has granted additional time to the prosecution as the probe continues. The matter remains a focal point for legal experts monitoring international parental child abduction and cross-border jurisdiction enforcement.
