Kochi Synagogue Arson Was 'Test Run' For Multi-State Terror Plot, Say Police
Kochi Police reveal that the October 12 arson attack near the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue served as a dry run for a coordinated multi-state terror conspiracy.

A Larger Conspiracy Unfolds
What initially appeared to be a localized act of vandalism near a historic landmark has evolved into a major national security investigation. According to Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, the October 12 arson attack outside the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam Market was not an isolated incident, but rather a meticulously planned "test run" for a broader, multi-state terror campaign.
Two weeks prior to the official disclosures, 32-year-old Ebin Paul allegedly targeted the Blossom Nursery, located directly opposite the synagogue. Investigators established that Paul arrived at the scene in a blue Maruti Suzuki Ignis, poured petrol on the premises, ignited the flames, and documented the act on his mobile phone before making his escape.
Police investigations revealed that the early-morning strike served as a proving ground. "The accused was first made to prove himself in Kochi and was then 'promoted' for bigger tasks," Commissioner Kumar stated, highlighting the compartmentalized nature of the operation.
Digital Footprints and Cryptocurrency Financing
As the probe widened, law enforcement uncovered a sophisticated operational structure. Investigators determined that Paul acted under the direct supervision of an elusive handler, receiving financial backing through cryptocurrency transactions. Authorities have also linked him to prior arson incidents in Muvattupuzha within the Ernakulam district.
Forensic analysis of Paul's mobile device has yielded critical digital evidence, unraveling deeper connections to a proscribed terrorist organization. While communicating via Telegram with a contact saved as "Boss," Paul reportedly named an individual known as "Vikram" during his statements. Cyber forensics and local police units are currently investigating whether both aliases point to the same handler.
Beyond executing local attacks, investigators found that Paul played a role in identifying potential targets in other states where subsequent strikes were being planned. Intelligence inputs and actionable leads have since been shared with law enforcement agencies across the targeted states.
Profile of the Accused and Central Agency Involvement
Ebin Paul hails from Vadayampady near Puthencruz in the Ernakulam district. A design graduate who completed his education in Pune, his background has drawn close scrutiny from a dedicated police team dispatched to Maharashtra. Family members have maintained that Paul was undergoing treatment for depression and operated as a freelance designer from his residence.
Recognizing the transnational and inter-state dimensions of the conspiracy, central intelligence agencies have been embedded in the probe from its inception. On October 23, authorities formally invoked the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Paul, and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) is slated to assume control of the ongoing investigation.
With Paul currently held in judicial custody, law enforcement officials indicate that further arrests and disclosures are imminent as they dismantle the wider terror network.
