Security Breach at Thekkampatti Sub-Jail
CHENNAI — The Tamil Nadu Prisons Department has placed nine prison staff members under immediate suspension following a massive security breach at the Thekkampatti Sub-Jail in the state's Theni district, which resulted in the escape of 17 undertrial prisoners.
Out of the 17 escapees, law enforcement authorities have successfully recaptured four individuals. Intensive search and combing operations remain active across the region to track down the remaining 13 fugitives.
Sandeep Rai Rathore, Director General of Police (DGP) for Tamil Nadu Prisons, acknowledged the severe administrative failure, stating that there was a clear lack and dereliction of duty.
The suspended personnel comprise two Chief Head Warders, one Grade I warder, and six Grade II warders, according to departmental records.
Multi-Agency Combing Operations
South Zone Inspector General of Police Bidari confirmed that expansive combing operations are currently underway within the rugged terrain of the local forested area, where police suspect the remaining escapees are hiding.
"We are confident we will secure all of them," the Inspector General stated.
Specialized police teams, backed by aerial surveillance drones scanning the dense forest canopy, have been deployed to scour the difficult landscape. Additionally, authorities have established security checkposts at 16 strategic locations to prevent the suspects from moving out of the district.
Staged Distraction Led to Breakout
Preliminary investigations indicate that the daring breakout was orchestrated after at least one of the undertrials feigned an epileptic seizure. This maneuver successfully lured prison personnel directly to the cell block.
The situation escalated rapidly when staff members attempted to intervene, resulting in a physical assault on the personnel and leaving a police officer with injuries before the group breached the facility's perimeter.
The escaped undertrials face various serious criminal charges, including attempted murder and drug-related offenses. Police records show that the escapees are predominantly young adults aged between 19 and 26, hailing from multiple districts across Tamil Nadu, including Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Kanniyakumari, and Theni.
