Background of the Incident

HYDERABAD — A Lord Ram idol, which was temporarily installed at a prominent intersection in Hyderabad for Dussehra celebrations earlier this month, was removed by a temple trust following directives from municipal civic authorities. The statue, placed at the Basheerbagh Chowrasta during Vijayadashami by local Hindu groups, became the center of administrative action after complaints were registered regarding its placement on a public thoroughfare.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had previously petitioned to officially rename the intersection 'Sriram Chowk'. However, acting on formal complaints, the city's civic administration directed the temple trust to clear the site, citing binding Supreme Court guidelines that prohibit unauthorized religious structures and statues on public roads, pavements, and utility spaces.

Complying with the administrative directive, the trust removed the idol. Visual documentation of the statue being loaded onto a transport vehicle subsequently circulated widely across social media platforms, drawing immediate political reactions.

Political Fallout and BJP Reaction

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on the ruling Congress-led government in Telangana, accusing the administration of harbouring an "anti-Hindu" mindset. Senior party leaders warned that the public would hold the government accountable for the removal.

In an official statement released on social media, the Telangana BJP unit condemned the action. "The Congress Government's anti-Hindu mindset stands exposed once again. Removing the idol of Prabhu Shri Ram... near Basheerbagh Temple, Hyderabad, is a direct insult to millions of devotees," the state unit stated, adding that the electorate of Telangana would respond decisively.

Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao went a step further, predicting severe political repercussions for the ruling party. Drawing historical parallels, Rao referenced past political developments in Uttar Pradesh to emphasize his warning.

"Not the first time a Congress government has tried to remove an idol of Shri Ram," Rao stated, recalling historical events surrounding Ayodhya in 1949. "Today, the Congress has disappeared in Uttar Pradesh. After this incident in Basheerbagh, the same situation awaits the Congress in Telangana. People will neither forget nor forgive; wrath awaits Congress."

Administrative and Legal Framework

The removal underscores the ongoing enforcement of judicial precedents concerning public spaces in urban centers across India. Municipal authorities have increasingly relied on Supreme Court directives mandating the clearance of unauthorized religious structures on public land to maintain secular zoning and unhindered public movement.

As political tensions simmer following the incident, local law enforcement and civic bodies remain on alert to prevent any escalation of protests or public unrest in the state capital.
