Celebrating Tradition and Devotion

Married couples across India are observing Karwa Chauth 2026, one of the most significant traditional fasts, marked by prayers for longevity, health, and mutual prosperity. Falling on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik, the festival brings families together in a vibrant display of cultural heritage.

Traditionally observed primarily in North India, the scope of the festival has evolved over the years. While married women traditionally observe a strict nirjala vrat—a day-long fast without food and water—an increasing number of husbands now also keep the fast as a mark of partnership, love, and equality.

The day's observances commence before dawn with Sargi, a traditional pre-dawn meal typically prepared and sent by the mother-in-law to provide sustenance for the day ahead.

Auspicious Timings and Puja Muhurat

The Chaturthi Tithi commenced at 1:06 AM and is scheduled to conclude at 10:09 PM. In the national capital of New Delhi, the day's fast begins at sunrise around 6:31 AM.

For those preparing for the evening rituals, the auspicious Karwa Chauth puja muhurat is slated between 5:38 PM and 6:56 PM. Homes nationwide are lighting up with decorated puja thalis, traditional earthen pots known as karwas, and intricate henna designs adorning hands.

Regional Moonrise Timings

The concluding ritual of the day involves breaking the fast after sighting the moon through a sieve, accompanied by prayers offered to the moon deity. Because geography dictates lunar visibility, moonrise timings vary significantly across regions:

* Kolkata: Expected around 7:47 PM * New Delhi: Expected around 8:17 PM * Mumbai: Expected around 9:00 PM

As families gather on rooftops and balconies to catch the first glimpse of the moon, the festival reinforces bonds of affection, shared commitments, and cultural continuity across generations.
