Campaign Rally Remarks in Michigan

US President Donald Trump launched a sharp verbal attack on Norway during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, criticizing the Scandinavian nation over the Nobel Peace Prize selection process. Speaking ahead of the critical US midterm elections scheduled for November 3, Trump voiced stark opposition to immigration from the country, linking his stance directly to the Norwegian Nobel Committee's decision.

"Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually," Trump told supporters during the address.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has openly expressed his desire to receive the prestigious international accolade. The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was ultimately awarded to judge and former UN rights chief Navi Pillay of South Africa.

Criticism of the Nobel Committee

Trump heavily criticized the committee's choice, labeling the outcome a "disgraceful and embarrassing decision" while maintaining that the honor rightfully belonged to him. Elaborating on his immigration stance, Trump stated that while he would welcome immigrants from certain nations, individuals from Norway would be excluded.

"So I don't want anybody from Norway, because I didn't get the Nobel Prize," Trump declared.

Despite the fiery rhetoric, administration officials have not yet indicated whether these campaign statements translate into an official or formal shift in United States immigration policy regarding Norwegian citizens.

International Response

In response to the remarks, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide defended the integrity of the Nobel Committee during an interview with national broadcaster NRK. Eide emphasized the independence of the institution, noting that officials in Oslo had reiterated this independence to Washington.

"He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering - and that is still the case," Eide stated.

This incident echoes similar controversial remarks made by Trump in 2018 during his first term in office, when he used comparable language to describe Haiti and several African nations during discussions on immigration policy.
