Tragedy on Mumbai Tracks: Three Dead After Massive Central Railway Disruptions Strand Thousands
Three commuters died while walking along Mumbai's railway tracks after a major signaling failure and fire severely crippled Central Railway services during peak morning hours.

Infrastructure Collapse Paralyzes Transit Network
MUMBAI — Tragedy struck Mumbai’s sprawling commuter network on Monday morning as three individuals were found dead on railway tracks after a catastrophic signaling failure brought Central Railway local trains to a grinding halt. The massive transit paralysis left tens of thousands of commuters stranded on the first workday of the week.
The disruption was triggered by a fire that broke out near the Kanjurmarg station around 10:00 AM, severely damaging critical infrastructure and causing the complete collapse of the signaling system between Thane and Vikhroli. Compounding the crisis, an overhead wire technical glitch had occurred earlier between Mulund and Thane, throwing the entire network into disarray.
Fatal Risks Taken by Stranded Commuters
With both slow and fast line services gridlocked in both up and down directions, frustrated passengers waited hours for updates. As frustration mounted and trains remained stationary with no immediate prospect of movement, several commuters took the dangerous step of disembarking from stalled coaches to walk along the tracks toward nearby stations.
Tragically, the gamble proved fatal for three individuals. Railway authorities confirmed that two victims were found on the Ghatkopar-Vikhroli stretch and subsequently transported to Rajawadi Hospital, while a third fatality was reported further up the line in Bhandup.
Restoration Efforts and Ripple Effects
Railway engineering teams rushed to the site to undertake extensive repair work, including the replacement of damaged cables. Officials estimated that full restoration of normal operations would extend late into the night. By Monday evening, railway authorities confirmed that three out of the four affected lines had been successfully brought back online, while urgently appealing to the public to refrain from walking on active tracks.
The knock-on effects of the railway collapse severely impacted vehicular transit across the metropolis. A massive traffic gridlock paralyzed the Eastern Express Highway, leaving cars, buses, and commercial vehicles crawling for hours as displaced commuters sought alternative modes of transport.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and raised critical questions among daily commuters regarding the resilience of Mumbai's suburban rail infrastructure, coming barely a day after the Central Railway had executed a planned 'Mega Block' for routine maintenance.
