Cyclone Arnab Threatens Andhra Pradesh: Chief Minister Naidu Places State on High Alert
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to ensure zero loss of life as Cyclone Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, threatening the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Impending Severe Cyclonic Storm
As Cyclone Arnab rapidly intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, the Andhra Pradesh government has swung into emergency mode. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has issued strict directives to state machinery, warning that no delays in restoring essential services will be tolerated as the state braces for a severe weather onslaught.
According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system has escalated from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. Forecasters predict it will transform into a severe cyclonic storm by midnight and further intensify into a very severe system.
The meteorological office projects the cyclone will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Sustained wind speeds are expected to reach between 115 and 125 kilometers per hour, with violent gusts touching up to 140 kilometers per hour.
Government Preparedness and Evacuation Protocols
Reviewing the high-level disaster management preparedness, Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that the primary objective is to prevent any loss of life while keeping property damage to an absolute minimum. He instructed district administrations to set up round-the-clock control rooms, issue public alerts at regular intervals, and provide cyclone updates every four hours.
Local authorities have been tasked with persuading residents in vulnerable coastal zones to relocate to designated safe shelters immediately. Furthermore, all fishing vessels have been ordered to remain docked, and officials are proactively shifting pregnant women near due dates to hospitals to circumvent potential transportation roadblocks caused by heavy flooding or blocked communication networks.
To manage rescue and relief operations effectively, a combined force of 10 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 11 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed across critical districts, bringing the total operational strength to 21 teams.
Power Infrastructure and Emergency Services
With heavy to extremely heavy rainfall forecast for North Andhra and central coastal districts, municipal and utility corporations are taking preemptive measures. APCPDCL Chairman and Managing Director P. Pulla Reddy conducted a comprehensive review of electrical infrastructure preparedness, ensuring that repair crews, specialized vehicles, and backup equipment are stationed strategically.
Dedicated control rooms have been established across various circle and division offices, with special district-level hubs functioning in NTR, Krishna, Bapatla, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts.
Authorities have issued a strong public safety advisory urging citizens to stay away from downed power lines and report any electrical hazards immediately through the 1912 toll-free helpline. The administration remains steadfast in its mission to maintain continuous communication, execute rapid evacuations, and ensure the swift restoration of civic amenities once the storm passes.
