Tragedy Strikes Bir Billing Skies

A tragic paragliding accident in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala region has claimed the life of a Bulgarian national, while local emergency services successfully rescued his companion following a grueling overnight rescue operation in treacherous mountainous terrain.

According to local law enforcement officials, the victim has been identified as Maxim Valentinovich Gavrilichenko. His fellow countryman and flying companion, Stephen Antony, survived the incident and was safely evacuated.

Details of the Incident

Preliminary investigations indicate that Gavrilichenko arrived in India on October 7 on a valid tourist visa. On Sunday, the two Bulgarian nationals embarked on a solo paragliding flight, launching from the renowned takeoff site at Bir Billing around 11:00 AM.

Between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM, while flying at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters near Rising Star Peak in the Khanaira area of Dharamshala, strong winds reportedly disrupted their flight path. Gavrilichenko suffered a fatal impact with the ground, whereas Antony managed to land safely.

Complex Overnight Rescue Operation

Upon receiving distress signals, a massive search and rescue operation was mobilized around 9:00 PM on Sunday. The mission was executed through a coordinated effort involving the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and multiple specialized local teams.

Authorities noted that the operation posed significant logistical challenges due to the remote, high-altitude terrain and the darkness. Command teams maintained strict oversight over communication networks, field team deployments, and precise location tracking.

The demanding operation spanned the entire night and concluded successfully by Monday morning around 10:00 AM.

Ongoing Legal and Medical Formalities

Following the completion of the recovery mission, emergency teams transported Gavrilichenko's remains down the mountain. His body has been placed in the morgue at the Zonal Hospital in Dharamshala, where a postmortem examination is scheduled to be conducted.

Surviving tourist Stephen Antony received immediate medical and logistical support from local authorities and was airlifted out of the disaster zone during the rescue efforts.

Local police have initiated formal legal proceedings under the relevant provisions of the law. Officials confirmed that a definitive conclusion regarding the precise technical causes of the accident will be released upon the completion of a thorough safety and meteorological investigation.
