Comprehensive Audit Targets Dead and Ineligible Recipients

The Delhi government has officially commenced a sweeping verification drive targeting old-age pension records across the capital. The large-scale administrative exercise is designed to identify deceased individuals and ineligible recipients currently enrolled in the welfare scheme, according to official data reviewed by Daily News 365.

The timing of the audit coincides with a notable rise in senior citizen pension recipients, which has climbed to 4.41 lakh in the current fiscal year, approaching the highest levels recorded over the past decade.

Fluctuations in Beneficiary Numbers Over the Decade

Data extracted from the Delhi Economic Survey outlines a fluctuating trajectory for the old-age pension scheme over the last ten years:

* FY16: 3.88 lakh beneficiaries * FY18: 4.38 lakh beneficiaries * FY20: 4.64 lakh beneficiaries (Decade Peak) * FY21 - FY24: A steady decline, dropping to 4.25 lakh in FY21, 4.18 lakh in FY22, and hitting a low of 4.05 lakh in FY24. * FY25 - FY26: A post-pandemic rebound, rising to 4.34 lakh in FY25 and reaching 4.41 lakh by March 2026.

Despite the recent upward trend, the current beneficiary tally remains below the peak levels recorded in FY20.

Potential Impact on Beneficiary Rolls

The ongoing verification initiative, expected to span approximately three months, covers roughly 4.4 lakh elderly residents. Senior government functionaries estimate that the thorough audit could result in vacancies amounting to 20 to 25 percent of the existing recipient base.

These projected vacancies largely account for beneficiaries who have passed away, alongside individuals improperly drawing multiple streams of government financial assistance simultaneously. Applied to the current base, this estimate points to between 88,000 and 1.10 lakh potential removals from the active roster.

Financial Stakes for Senior Citizens

Under the existing welfare structure detailed in official economic reports, financial aid is tiered by age bracket. Senior citizens aged 60 to 69 receive a monthly disbursement of Rs 2,000, while those aged 70 and above are allocated Rs 2,500 per month.

For genuinely eligible elderly residents, administrative errors or incomplete paperwork during the verification process carry high stakes. Mismanagement could result in an annual loss of Rs 24,000 for beneficiaries in the younger bracket, and up to Rs 30,000 annually for those aged 70 and older. Authorities have assured that grievance redressal mechanisms will be prioritized to prevent wrongful exclusions during the audit.
