Fatal Collision on Container Road

KOCHI — A tragic late-night accident on Container Road in Kochi has claimed the life of a 47-year-old roadside eatery operator, after a high-end luxury vehicle driven by a minor allegedly rammed into his scooter from behind.

The victim, identified as Jayabalakrishnan of the Manjaly area, was returning home around 2:20 AM after closing his shop when the Mercedes-Benz struck his vehicle near the Ford showroom at Maraparambu in Cheranalloor. The impact completely obliterated the scooter, leaving Jayabalakrishnan with fatal injuries. Although local residents rushed to his aid and attempted to transport him to a medical facility, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the vehicle involved in the crash is registered in the name of a local court judge currently posted in Thrissur. The driver has been identified as the judge's 17-year-old son.

Police Investigation and Legal Actions

The Cheranalloor police have registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to rash driving on a public way, and Section 106(1), concerning causing death by negligence. Following the incident, the teenager was detained by law enforcement but subsequently released on station bail. Police officials indicated he will be summoned again as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Investigators are actively examining the liability of the registered owner—the boy's father—to determine whether charges should be extended to him. In his initial statement to investigators, the teenager claimed he took the car without his parents' knowledge out of a desire to drive it, adding that heavy rain and a sudden directional change by the scooter contributed to the crash.

Forensic experts, Motor Vehicles Department officials, and police investigators have inspected the accident site, collected digital evidence, and are reviewing surrounding CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Preliminary medical examinations, including blood sample analysis, were conducted to test for alcohol or other intoxicants. Initial findings reportedly showed no signs of alcohol consumption, though comprehensive forensic reports remain pending.

Family Alleges Coercion and Intimidation

The tragedy has triggered intense public scrutiny and sharp protests from the victim's family, who have voiced profound distrust in the local investigative process due to the accused's familial ties to the judiciary.

Relatives alleged that the judge behaved aggressively toward them at the police station when they questioned how a minor had access to a high-powered vehicle without a valid driver's license. According to a family member, the judicial officer adopted a threatening posture and warned them against questioning him.

Further compounding the family's grievances, the victim's brother, Selvaraj, alleged that police officers compelled him to delete photographs of the implicated Mercedes-Benz from his mobile phone, noting that the judge had similarly objected to documentation of the crash site.

The grieving family fears that the case may be systematically weakened and that crucial evidence has been omitted from the official FIR. They have vowed to pursue rigorous legal recourse to ensure full accountability. Meanwhile, police authorities have maintained that a transparent, thorough, and impartial investigation will be carried out.
