Political Showdown Ahead of Festive Season

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has rejected an appeal from Delhi's business community urging the Opposition INDIA bloc to postpone its planned November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan. The business associations had cited potential disruptions to crucial festival shopping periods.

In a public statement shared via social media, Gandhi insisted that a quick resolution and the cancellation of the protest entirely rest with the central government. He claimed that the demonstrations could be called off in "30 seconds" if Prime Minister Narendra Modi dismissed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Business Community's Concerns Over Peak-Season Disruption

Gandhi's comments follow a formal letter sent by the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) chairman, Brijesh Goyal. The CTI had requested that the political alliance defer its mass gathering until after November 10, warning that a large-scale political protest right before the peak festival shopping season could jeopardize commercial activity worth an estimated Rs 10,000 crore across the national capital.

According to trade representatives, the venue sits immediately adjacent to Old Delhi's primary wholesale and retail hubs, which experience their highest footfall of the year during the week leading up to Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj. The capital's markets typically record massive economic turnovers during this window, making commercial access and smooth transit vital for local vendors.

Opposition's Ongoing Campaign

The upcoming November 1 rally forms a central part of a broader, sustained campaign by the Opposition alliance targeting the Election Commission's handling of the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise and other administrative decisions. Opposition leaders have consistently alleged unilateral decision-making within the poll body, prompting high-profile demonstrations and legal challenges in the Supreme Court.
