Tragedy Strikes Paras Ram Nagar

CHANDIGARH — A 32-year-old man, identified by local leaders as Ramesh, was found dead under grim circumstances in a vacant field near the Dussehra Ground in Punjab's Bathinda district on Monday evening. The discovery of the body, which still had a syringe lodged in the right arm, has once again thrust the state's persistent battle against substance abuse into the national spotlight.

Local police and volunteers from the Naujavan Welfare Society rushed to the scene in the Paras Ram Nagar area around 8:00 PM following distress calls from residents. Upon arrival, rescue workers checked the victim's vital signs but confirmed he had already succumbed, noting that the body was cold to the touch. A parked motorcycle was also discovered near the site, though investigators have yet to establish its ownership.

Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities conducted a preliminary search of the victim's belongings but failed to recover any identity cards or official documents, complicating immediate efforts to officially notify family members through administrative channels.

While the presence of the syringe heavily points toward a suspected drug overdose, local police officials emphasized that the exact cause of death remains officially unconfirmed pending a comprehensive forensic examination and post-mortem report. Investigators are working to trace the source of the substance injected and determine the precise sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.

Sharp Political Fallout

The grim incident drew swift and fierce condemnation from opposition leaders, who launched scathing attacks against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration over its handling of the state's law and order and public health crises.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal took to social media to voice his outrage, holding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann directly accountable for the unchecked proliferation of narcotics in the region. Badal asserted that illicit drugs remain alarmingly accessible to the youth while families continue to suffer devastating losses.

Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also echoed these concerns, highlighting the profound grief experienced by the victim's family and pointing to an alleged systemic failure involving the local administration, law enforcement, and drug syndicates. Opposition figures have demanded immediate, stringent crackdowns on drug peddlers and mafias operating within the state, calling for immediate accountability from those in power.
